Many adoptions in Michigan happen when a married couple decides to start or expand their family through adoption. They’re going through the process as a couple.
In fact, those who are married are required to work together if they’re going to adopt. One person cannot decide to do so on their own. This is even true for people who are married but separated. One person may want to adopt, but they would either have to reconcile with their spouse and do it together, or they would need to get a divorce and then adopt. They cannot start a single-parent adoption while still remaining married.
Adoptions are fully legal for single parents in Michigan, there’s no requirement to be married or even in a relationship. A lot of people adopt specifically because they want to care for and raise a child, despite not being married and not having biological children of their own.
Is it a good environment for the child?
Yes! Experts note that a lot of children who get adopted by single parents absolutely thrive in this new environment. As long as the home is safe and the parent puts the child’s best interests first, they can give them a wonderful living situation. Having a parent who is involved in their life and who cares about them is much more important for adopted children than having a “traditional” family structure. Single parents can still be excellent parents after adoption.
If you are a prospective parent who is considering adoption, whether you are married or not, just be sure you know what legal steps you’ll need to take under Michigan law.
